One thing to consider (though it may or may not be a valid point) is that they stopped using the pure-ruby yaml parser in Ruby C some time ago. It is entirely possible that this parser is written against Ruby 1.6 semantics. I don't know if that plays into things here, but it might...so far, the parser has generally worked...
