?The 4th edition of ECMA-262 was abandoned due to disagreement over the
direction. ECMAScript 4 was very much a different language that introduced
static typing, true class-based inheritance, and other paradigms from more
traditional programming languages.

At around the same time, a smaller group proposed what was called ECMAScript
3.1 as incremental improvements on top of the existing ECMAScript spec. When
the decision was made to move forward with ECMAScript 3.1 over ECMAScript 4,
ECMAScript 3.1 was renamed to ECMAScript 5 so as not to be confused with the
very different ECMAScript 4 spec.

Subject: [JSMentors] Why the fourth edition of ECMAScript was not completedand
not published?

ECMAScript Edition 4 the Ecma standard number "ECMA-262 Edition 4" was reserved
but not used in the Ecma publication process. Therefore "ECMA-262 Edition 4" as
an Ecma International publication does not exist.

The present fifth edition of ECMAScript was published as "ECMA-262 5th edition".

Why the fourth edition of ECMAScript was not completed and not published?
