What I've found is that it is worthwhile to separate presentation from the
business logic (including database access), and from the logic that deals
with the server-side environment (the servlet container, initialization,
details of dispatching, etc.).  There are very detailed and elaborate
frameworks to support this approach, and they certainly appear useful for
"heavy-duty" type applications, but even for more trivial pursuits, even
with a less formal approach, separation leads to a simple architecture, with
components that have clear-cut responsibilities, that are easier to test and
maintain.
