THIS WEEK'S THEME: Bites

This week's W.O.W. proves that while some "bites"
are painful, others can be informative and even
uplifting!

1. Snakebite Treatment
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-021901

Learn the dos and don'ts of treating a snakebite
at this simple destination. You could save a life
this summer! Unlike what you may have seen in the
movies, never try to suck out the venom, cut into
the bite with a knife or waste precious time trying
to find the offending snake. Instead, let the bite
bleed for about 20 seconds, disinfect it, immobilize
the limb, then follow the detailed instructions here.

2. First Aid for Spider Bites
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-021902

"Ouch!" Did you just get bitten by a spider? Walk
to your computer and connect to this page to find
out what to do next. Simple illustrations make
treatment a breeze, and it's good to know that most
hospitals have antivenom on hand to treat poisonous
bites. Special instructions are included for dealing
with funnel-web and red-black spiders. Find out more.

3. Help! My Ferret Bites!
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-021903

Thinking of getting a ferret? You're in good company.
Thousands of Americans purchased one of these furry
companions last year. However, your new family member
may think of you as one big toy when you first bring
her home. Finger nipping may be your ferret's most
favorite game! This site presents hands-on advice for
putting an end to the unwanted biting by redirecting
your ferret's energy toward things like getting a
treat out of your hand.

http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-021904

These "bytes" are guaranteed not to hurt. In fact,
they may even enlighten you! Short sound clips feature
speeches given by Grover Cleveland, William McKinley,
Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Franklin D.
Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Ronald
Reagan. Two musical selections -- "Hail to the Chief"
and the "The Star-Spangled Banner" -- are also included.

6. "Dracula"
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-021906

This fictional character has quite a bite. In fact,
Dracula has been biting the necks of unsuspecting
victims since he first appeared in the novel bearing his
name in 1897. Did you know that "Dracula" is the
biggest-selling novel in the world (only the Bible has
sold more copies) and has inspired more than 700 films?
You can read the full text of the world's most enduring
classic Gothic novel at this site.

7. Birth of Bits & Bytes
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-021907

In many ways, your computer runs on "bites" -- spelled
bytes. This lesson plan introduces students to the
development of early computers. After conducting both
online and offline research, students use markers and
rulers to illustrate a time line of computer technology
discoveries, from ENIAC in 1946 to the present day.
Lesson extensions are provided.

8. Slashing & Slicing: Allosaurus Bites
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/W-021908

For decades, paleontologists were confused about how
one dinosaur used its jaws to bite down on prey. It had
a very strong skull, but its teeth were relatively weak.
Instead of simply biting its prey directly, a new tool
used to test the strength of bridges revealed that the
allosaurus may have violently head-butted its quarry after
a fast-paced pursuit. Read this short article to learn
more about how this early predator took a bite out of
its competition -- literally!
