Maybe you could make something similar to what MediaComposer has - All sourceclips has a timeline (well, actually, a timeline is just a graphic display of what the clip contains. So it is not a question if a clip has a timeline, it is just a question if you want to display it). To view the timeline of a clip, load it in the source monitor and click on a button under the timeline that switches the timeline between the sequence and the source monitor.
