Can confirm this, KDE 4.3.2 from Kubuntu packages.

Whenever the network is pulled out from under Kontact/Kmail and it can't
retrieve email, it just stays in "Checking mail..." status. Try to abort the
checking mail processes by clicking their buttons after clicking the little
down arrow in the bottom right ends up with the stating "Aborting..." and
nothing else.

It's a pain as Kontact has to be restarted, so anything else you are using in
Kontact has to be stopped (timers in Time Tracker for instance) and restarted.

Is it a difficult one to fix ? Kopete seems to get it right. Why not just stop
regular mail checking when no network is present ?
