If $XDG_DATA_HOME is $HOME/data, then the default locations for a couple of resources would be in $HOME/data, e.g. $HOME/data/local-mails. On that system/account using data/local-mail relative based on $HOME would be OK, but is that what the user would assume? Or would the user assume that the relative paths are based on $XDG_DATA_HOME?
