Have you considered starting with the reference manual
(http://www.lua.org/manual/5.1/)? You could check on the Lua list if
there is already someone working on it, and then offer your help
towards it.

While I'm not sure if Roberto would post it on the lua.org site
without being able to verify the translation, I'm pretty sure he
wouldn't mind pointing to it once it is available and commented by
other users.

Note that depending on your estimate for the duration of the effort,
it may be worth targeting Lua 5.2 instead... :o)
