A coalition of parties led by the Greens and French nationalists have attacked Britain for its role in providing the US National Security Agency with sophisticated listening posts in Britain. They claim that the facilities have been used to pick up trade secrets from European companies. A total of 171 MEPs have signed a petition calling for an inquiry, more than enough to force the issue to a vote of the European Parliament. A simple majority of the body's 626 members will be required to trigger a hearing along the lines of a US Congressional inquiry. A European Parliament report claims that the joint system, known as Echelon, enables the Anglo-Saxon powers to intercept faxes, e-mails, telephone and satellite communications anywhere in the world at the rate of "billions of messages per hour", using a voice recognition system to track terrorists and a computer dictionary to troll for sensitive words.
