>CUBAN PRESIDENT FIDEL CASTRO SAYS FATHER OF ELIAN GONZALEZ IS
>WILLING TO TRAVEL ALONE TO THE UNITED STATES TO PICK UP HIS SON
>
>Havana, April 3 (RHC)-- Cuban President Fidel Castro has asserted that the
>father of Elian Gonzalez, Juan Miguel Gonzalez, is willing to travel alone
>to the United States if U.S. authorities guarantee that his son can
>immediately return with him to Cuba. In a TV appearance Sunday, the Cuban
>leader said if there is no guarantee -- if Juan Miguel will have to wait for
>weeks in the United States -- Havana will continue insisting that the father
>be accompanied by a group of Elian's schoolmates, teachers and child
>specialists to favor the boy's readaptation.
>
>The spokesperson of the kidnappers in Miami have rejected the possibility of
>Elian residing in the residence of the chief of Cuba's Interests Section in
>Washington D.C., arguing that it's Cuban territory. But Fidel Castro said
>Cuba would be willing to renounce the diplomatic immunity of that residence.
>
>Terming as correct Washington's decision that only Juan Miguel Gonzalez can
>speak for his son, President Castro nevertheless stated that U.S.
>authorities have acted in a weak, careless and at times naive manner in this
>case. Recalling that the problem was created by the U.S. government, the
>Cuban leader said U.S. authorities underestimated Miami's
>counterrevolutionary mafia.
>
>With respect to Marisleysis Gonzalez, Elian's cousin, President Fidel Castro
>said she could visit Cuba as often as she wished once the child is returned.
>He said despite the fact that indignation has been running high on the
>island, the Cuban people are not vengeful or spiteful.
>
>
>NEW YORK TIMES ISSUES STRONG CONDEMNATION OF
>MIAMI'S REACTIONARY CUBAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY
>
>New York, April 3 (RHC)-- The New York Times has issued its strongest
>condemnation ever of Miami's reactionary Cuban-American community, insisting
>that it's time to put a stop to the hysteria and threats against the law on
>the part of those supporting the kidnapping of Elian Gonzalez.
>
>The influential U.S. news daily recalled that kidnapping and holding
>hostages is against the law, and that licenses aren't granted to commit
>these crimes. The New York Times charged that Elian is being retained by a
>great uncle who woke up one morning to find himself famous -- marveling at
>the attention and support he's receiving from the powerful political forces
>of the Cuban-American community in southern Florida.
>
>Custody disputes, wrote the news daily, are usually resolved peacefully, but
>in this case, those in Miami are blinded by hatred. The newspaper termed as
>"the last straw" Vice President Albert Gore's support of street mobs in
>detriment to the rule of law -- reminding the democratic presidential
>candidate that Elian has a father in Cuba.
>
>
>UNION LEADERS CONDEMN KIDNAPPING OF SIX-YEAR-OLD ELIAN GONZALEZ
>
>New Delhi, April 3 (RHC)-- More than 60 union leaders from the five
>continents have issued a statement condemning Washington's nearly 40 year
>blockade against Cuba and demanding the immediate return to Cuba of
>six-year-old Elian Gonzalez, who is still being illegally held in Miami.
>
>The statement was in the framework of an International Conference of
>Solidarity against Blockades and Sanctions, held in New Delhi, India. The
>conference served as a preparatory meeting of the 14th Congress of the
>International Federation of Trade Unions.
>
>A delegate to the New Delhi meeting pointed out that the fight for Elian's
>return to Cuba has become a universal symbol in the defense of the full
>independence and sovereignty of nations.
>
>
>12th CONGRESS OF LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN STUDENTS UNDERWAY IN HAVANA
>
>Havana, April 3 (RHC)-- The 12th Congress of the Organization of Latin
>American and Caribbean Students -- OCLAE -- is underway in the Cuban capital
>with the participation of some 5000 delegates from 36 countries, including
>Canada and the United States.
>
>As part of the event's agenda, the OCLAE Representatives Meeting its
>sessions at Havana's International Convention Center with the presence of
>Cuban Ministers of Education and Higher Education, Luis Ignacio Gomez and
>Fernando Vecino Alegret, respectively. Three members of each delegation
>participated in the meeting, aimed at discussing and approving the main
>report, which was presented by Josvany Diaz Romero, President of OCLAE's
>Executive Secretariat.
>
>The representatives meeting, which concludes tomorrow, Tuesday, includes an
>analysis of the organization's work, structure and new membership, as well
>as the election of the new Executive Secretariat. Meanwhile, delegations
>continued their debates in six commissions, dealing with issues such as the
>implementation of neo-liberal policies and the role of students, gender,
>culture and identity, as well as environment and development.
>
>Delegates to the 12th Congress of the Organization of Latin American and
>Caribbean Students participated in the inauguration this evening of a
>permanent Open Tribune of Youth and Students on the Malecon, in front of the
>U.S. Interests Section in Havana.
>
>
>ECUATORIAN UNIVERSITIES DEMAND VOTE IN FAVOR OF CUBA
>
>Quito, April 3 (RHC)-- Ecuador's Council of Universities and Polytechnical
>Institutes (CONUEP) has joined a public call, urging the Ecuadorian
>government to abstain from voting against Cuba at the United Nations Human
>Rights Commission, thus reverting the country's position in 1999.
>
>In an open letter sent to Ecuadorian President Gustavo Noboa, the
>educational institution called for strengthened bilateral relations with the
>United States, but without affecting the principles of Latin American
>solidarity.
>
>The letter emphasized that human rights cannot be a unilateral subject,
>especially when the nation that annually proposes sanctions against Cuba is
>the same country which maintains an internationally condemned economic and
>trade blockade against Cuba.
>
>In 1999, during the 55th meeting of the United Nations Human Rights
>Commission in Geneva -- unlike most Latin American nations -- Ecuador sided
>with the United States against Cuba.
>
>
>CUBAN COUNCIL OF CHURCHES HOLDS 39th GENERAL ASSEMBLY
>
>Holguin, April 3 (RHC)-- The Cuban Council of Churches (CIC) has issued a
>resolution condemning Washington's blockade against Cuba, the U.S. Cuban
>Adjustment Act and the kidnapping of six-year-old Elian Gonzalez. The
>statement was made in the framework of the organization's 39th General
>Assembly, held in eastern Holguin province.
>
>Signed by the nearly 400 delegates, the resolution also condemns U.S.
>military presence on the Puerto Rican island municipality of Vieques. During
>the assembly, renowned international religious leaders received recognition
>for their work in favor of unity, peace and love. Among those honored were
>the out-going President of the Cuban Council of Churches, Oden Marichal, and
>the former President of the National Council of Churches of the United
>States, Reverend Joan B. Campbell.
