In recent years the United States has become notorious for torturing
prisoners, both overseas and in the U.S.

This practice violates the Eighth Amendment, Common Article 3 of the Geneva
Conventions and the UN Convention Against Torture.

To protest US government torture, a coalition of progressive groups will
stage vigils in West Los Angeles and Santa Monica

on Wednesday, June 26, International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. -
June is also Torture Awareness Month.

In the morning, a vigil will be held at the Federal Building at Wilshire
& Federal in West Los Angeles from 10:00 AM to 12 Noon.

In the afternoon, a 2nd vigil will be held on the McClure Tunnel Pedestrian
Overpass at Palisades Park & Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica from 4:30
to 6:30 PM

Participants at the vigils will express their solidarity with hunger
strikers at Guantanamo Bay protesting their prolonged, arbitrary and
tortuous imprisonment.

They will also express solidarity with hunger strikers in the SHU (Special
Housing Unit) of California's notorious Pelican Bay Prison,

where prisoners are held in solitary confinement for years and sometimes
decades.

Prolonged solitary confinement has been found by the United Nations to
constitute torture.

"Torture is torture, no matter where it is, whether it's at Pelican Bay
in California or Guantanamo Bay in Cuba,"

says Kathleen Hernandez of Veterans for Peace. "It's un-American and
immoral."

Three members of Veterans for Peace, Elliott Adams, Diane Wilson and
Tarak Kauf, are currently engaged in hunger strikes

in sympathy with the Guantanamo and Pelican Bay hunger strikers and are
available to be interviewed.

The vigils are organized by Veterans for Peace, Code Pink & Interfaith
Communities United For Justice & Peace.

Endorsers include March Forward, Progress Democrats of the Santa Monica
Mountains,

Topanga Peace Alliance and MLK Coaltition for Jobs, Justice and Peace & SOA
Watch-LA.
