As far as the Christmas in July thing, I have heard that it started in the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, when a bunch of Irish tourists decided that the snow falling made it look like Christmas. This inspired them to get the hotel staff to do up the place for an appropriate Christmas meal with decorations and all. I guess it is another of those urban myths.
