As I'm an anthropologist, I tend to use the anthropological term of "kinship" to refer to family structure. This includes biological kin, kin by marriage and fictive kin. To an anthropologist, a family (kin group) is what the members of that group agree that it is... it's about the relationships between members however those relationships are arrived at.
