Don't forget the lace makers on Burano Island in Venice, and other Lace makers in Italy, who might be able to give you an idea of numbers.

Subject: [lace] Lace makers census

Don't forget the lace makers of Portugal, there are two fishing villages (well
small towns actually) Peniche and Vila de Conde, where lace is made and is
still taught. Peniche has an annual festival for the lace (in July) when
every lace maker there, sits in the main square making lace, there is also a
competion for the best contempory piece of lace and also for a traditional
piece.
So perhaps two thousand lace makers in Portugal.
