According to reports that I read, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office preliminarily denied Twitters application for a trademark on "tweet", based on applications by TweetMarks, CoTweet and Tweetphot which all predated Twitters trademark application.
So, as I understand things, Twitter does not yet own a registered trademark for "Tweet" and based on Section 2(d) of the Trademark Act, their is a good chance they will not receive the trademark.
