ATLANTA, April 6 (UPI) _ A black, slimy mold has been linked to
unexplained infant deaths and
some consider it as dangerous to remove as asbestos. Researchers say
(Monday) the mold,
stachybotrys atra (``STACK'-ee-bah-tris ah-trah''), causes infants'
lungs to rupture and bleed by
inhibiting protein growth in babies younger than six months. They say
the study, published in April
issue of the journal Pediatrics, is the first to link the mold to human
illness. The researcher, of the
Centers for Disease Control's Air Pollution and Respiratory Branch in
Atlanta, has been studying a
cluster of infant deaths in Cleveland.
