Hi,

SWIG is a great tool. I used it to create several interfaces to
C libs for python. It's realy easy  ( compared with creating extension manually ;-)
but some C basics are very
useful.

I don't know either if there is already a perl module - so if not
try to create one with swig. You get a toolbox to extend many 
script languages with mightful c code to do almost anything
you want - it's worth it.
