Andrew solved this for the kernel build and I just copied his approach; I 
committed changes for openssl, syslinux and autoconf. automake must be another 
pb, or just related to a failing autoconf or whatelse compilation...

If you look at the commits, you'll see that it's easy to fix, once you have 
spotted the error.
