Since this seems to be a hot topic, I'll throw in a tidbit I just verified with my Bering-RC3 setup.
History - Charter Cable Modem (Motorola). 5 (now 3) dedicated IP's. Each IP needs ethernet card to verify unique MAC address. All feeding into my Bering FW, then passed back to both a dmz with net servers, and a Masq'd windoze net. Today, while trying to install Shorewall rules, I noticed that the 3 IP's were being logged as comming in THE SAME ethernet port. So I trashed my convoluted MASQ/SNAT/DNAT rules base, remove init lines for 2 of the 3 external ethernet ports, and installed simple Proxy Arp. Lo-and-Behold... things are working smoothly. So I am now seeking a few more NE2000 cards (ISA) with Jumpers, so that I can install them and NOT USE them. No data will flow thru them (10MB cards are fine), I just need them to report their MAC address, and I'm outta PCI slots in my Bering box... BTW I set the default gateway of the external ethernet port to it's OWN ip, and set its mask to 0.0.0.0. I know it's wierd, but it works. Anyone want more info, drop me a note...
