Jeremy,
I updated the madwifi.lrp package in CVS by adding pre-up and down
scripts, so that the following stanza in /etc/network/interfaces should
also work:
iface ath0 inet static
madwifi-base wifi0
...
wireless-mode master
The new package should show up in viewCVS within a few hours

Note that the current package should also work with using an "up"
statement, it's only somewhat easier this way.
