Bob Burton is co-author of the recently released Secrets and Lies, an anatomy of an anti environmental PR Campaign. Secrets and Lies is a rare insight, based on hundreds of pages of leaked documents, into the largely invisible world of the public relations industry. New Zealand Prime Minister, Jenny Shipley, was tarnished by the revelation in Secrets and Lies of the involvement of her and her staff in a PR campaign by state owned logging company, Timberland and the PR Firm, Shandwick. Among many things, this campaign was aimed at punishing journalists and dividing environmentalists. Helen Rosenbaum is Co-convenor of Australian Greens Victoria and Pacific Program Manager for the International Women's Development Agency. Helen has recently returned from the Ok Tedi Site in New Guinea, and will speak of current situation and history of the Ok Tedi mine. In 1993 the Australian Conservation Foundation released a report on Ok Tedi that was pivotal in the legal battle of the Landowners against BHP. The report and the landowner's case were met by a multi million dollar campaign to refute the claims against BHP's operations. However, six years on, BHP now feels that the mines' impacts do not accord with the companies new found 'environmental values'.
