Demand the release and safe return of East Timorese hostages

Friday 31 March, at 3 pm
Indonesian Consulate,
72 Queens Road
Albert Park
Melbourne

In September last year the Indonesian military forcibly removed hundreds of
thousands of East Timorese to concentration camps in West Timor.
Today between 50,000 and 80,000 hostages remain trapped in these camps and
in other parts of Indonesia, facing intimidation and violence from the
Indonesian military and militia who control the camps, as well as
life-threatening malnutrition and disease.
Under these conditions it is impossible for hostages to make a free choice
as to whether or not they wish to return to their homeland.
Death threats against those who attempt to do so remain common.
Yet the Indonesian government has declared that those who do not return by
31 March face transmigration to other parts of Indonesia.
