Prolific and versatile director, Michael Winterbottom (WELCOME TO
SARAJEVO, 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE, WONDERLAND) returns with his latest
offering, the critically acclaimed IN THIS WORLD. Striking a fine
balance between the fictional and documentary, IN THIS WORLD tells the
intimate story of two Afghani cousins, Jamal and Enayatullah who place
their lives in the hands of people smugglers and travel the old 'Silk
Road' in search of a better life in the UK. Filmed entirely on location
with non-professional actors, IN THIS WORLD gives reign to the drama
allowing us to peer behind the headlines and take stock of the broader
moral and political concerns while never loosing sight of the individual
emotional journey.

In This World is an extraordinary film that delivers a sustained,
sometimes gruelling and traumatic depiction of the business of people
smuggling. The film humanises the plight of refugees to a degree rarely
seen not only in the cinema but also in the mainstream media.

Winterbottom told the BBC earlier this year: "My starting point was the
news story about the 58 Chinese immigrants found suffocated in a
container at Dover. Also, in the run up to the last (UK) election, you
had politicians saying more and more hostile things about asylum seekers
and immigrants in general. It seemed that if you could go on that
journey with them, perhaps by the time they got to this country you'd be
rooting for them and wanting them to be here."

Given the current political climate in Australia, Michael Winterbottom's
timely document on the plight of asylum seekers - which won the top
prize at the Berlin Film festival this year - extends the film far
beyond the realms of pure entertainment, and is likely to provoke
considerable debate.
