*Wednesday, 28 January: *LHS Event: Planning for the 8 Hour Day*. *In
March - April 2006 the labour movement in Victoria celebrates the 150th
anniversary of building workers' victory in winning the 8 hour working
day. Speakers from the Labour History Society outline plans for a series
of commemorative events in 2006, and invite feedback

*Wednesday, 4 February: *NIB event: 'Did the Cars Eat Melbourne?'
Acclaimed social historian Graeme Davison -- author of the new book/ Car
Wars: How the Car Won Our Hearts --/ talks about the impact of the
automobile on Melbourne and ways of alleviating it.

*Wednesday, 11 February:* AFS Event. ALP Shadow Minister for
Superannuation Senator Nick Sherry talks about why superannuation reform
is necessary and how it can be made to happen.

*Wednesday, 18 February: *AFS Event: Victorian Minister for Housing and
Local Government Candy Broad discusses housing problems and explores
options for improvement.

*Wednesday, 25 February: *AFS Event ALP Shadow Minister for Workplace
Relations Craig Emmerson compares the Labor and Liberal approaches to
workplace relations, and discusses Labor's plans for workplace relations
reform.

*Wednesday, 3 March*: NIBS event: 'Neutralising the NGOs: How the Right
targets Non-Government Organisations'. Tim Thornton from the Department
of Economics at Monash University uncovers the Right's new assault on
NGOs and their role in advocacy and public policy consciousness-raising.

*Wednesday, 10 March: *NIB Event: 'Australian Lessons for the Global
AIDS Crisis'. Paul Sendzuik - Monash University researcher and author
of/ Learning to Trust: Australian Responses to AIDS - /talks about the
successes and failures of anti-AIDS efforts in Australia and what they
might mean for the rest of the world.

*Wednesday, 17 March: *AFS/Doctors' Reform Society Event: Australian
Democrats spokesperson on Health Senator Lyn Allison explores options
for Medicare and other key health policy issues with a DRS panel headed
by DRS secretary Tim Woodruff.

*Wednesday, 24 March: *LHS Event. 'The 1998 Maritime Dispute Six Years
On'.* *Six years on from the 1998 Maritime Dispute, a new history of
what was one of the most significant industrial battles of the 20th
century is being written. Labour History Society researchers discuss the
dispute and its implications for the labour movement and the Australian
industrial relations system.

*Wednesday, 31 March: *Overland Event. Acclaimed Australian author
Thomas Kenneally talks about cultural and artistic relations of
Australia and the United States, now and in the past. Admission - $10 or
$6 for subscribers - includes copy of /Overland/ 174. To be confirmed.
