What's going on?

The format seems to be working well enough. There's a poll about the
email format below - please use it to let me know what you think. From
the 1st of March, all Leftlink news items will be posted to the web
site, and a daily summary will be emailed out to all list members
(that's about 600 people).

Latest Survey::

The new Leftlink emails...:
      - are ideal.
      - should not need web links.
      - should not display events.
      - should not have news.
      - should have more information.
      - are unnecessary - the site is enough.

Theatre, Film and Humour - The Crass Motor Show, by Keep Left Theatre:
KEEP LEFT THEATRE Presents

The CRASS Motor Show
By Chris Gaffney (adapted from the Motor Show by Paul Thompson & Steve
Gooch)

Directed By Susanna Duffy

Keep Left Theatre presents the story of Henry Crass, a no nonsense, in
your face entrepreneur based loosely on Henry Ford who in 1903 founded
the Ford Motor Company. Ford was a noted union hater and anti Semite who
brought Ford To Australia in 1923. The rise and rise of Crass from
bastard to corporate bastard has touched quite a few hearts and even
more pockets.

Crass employs many a theatrical device, a broad comic vision and some
really great songs With a top cast of 16, and over 61 characters, this
is a fast moving, satirical musical comedy about greed on wheels and
the people who are run over. .

This night of Keep Left Theatre is not to be missed. Meet one of the new
rulers of the world.

Meet Mr. Crass at 8.00P.M. from the 18th to the 28th of February at
Trades Hall Victoria Street Carlton South. 3053

Seminars - Melbourne - Unveiling the Issues: Feminism, Islam and
Socialism:
Socialist Alliance invites you to a Public Forum in Footscray:

Unveiling the Issues: Feminism, Islam and Socialism

In the current climate of racism and anti-Muslim fear-mongering, women
are being attacked for wearing hijabs. In somecases this is being
justified in the name of feminism and in defence of secularism; for
example the French goverment's recent ban on the wearing of veils in
public schools.

This meeting explores why socialists and feminists should not only
defend a women's right to choose her clothing but also peoples freedom
of religious expression.

speaker: Margarita Windisch
(Socialist Alliance member, feminist and activist with the Victorian
Peace Network)

Seminars - Melbourne - Hegel and Ethical Politics:
University of Melbourne Summer School
Friday 20th February 2004, 9am-5pm
Muhammed Kamal, Andy Blunden and Geoff Boucher

The last 30 years has seen a major shift in social conflicts in the
industrialised world, from struggles for socio-economic reforms to
demands for cultural recognition. In the polarised philosophical debate
surrounding this paradigm shift, the "struggle for recognition" is
opposed to conceptualisations of politics in terms of "redistributive
justice." This polarisation connects with another debate of crucial
importance to the Left, between advocates of the so-called "identity
politics" of the new social movements and defenders of class politics.
The "recognition debate," as it has come to be known, therefore concerns
the future of left-wing politics in the industrialised democracies.

This seminar explores the notion of "Recognition" from three different
angles.
     * 9am: Introduction and Welcome, Andy Blunden
     * 9:30am: Muhammed Kamal: Hegel's Master-Slave Dialectic.
     * 11:30am: Andy Blunden: Recognition and Mediation.
     * 1:30pm: Geoff Boucher: Contemporary Struggles for Cultural
Recognition
     * 3:30pm: Panel discussion: Ethical Politics and Recognition.
