Below is a motion which Socialist Alliance members are taking to union
meetings to gather support for the 20 March anti-war demonstrations.

So far it has been passed by the Victorian AMWU state council, the
Victorian CFMEU branch meeting, the Geelong Trades & Labor Council, the
WA MUA state conference, the South Barwon AEU meeting, the
Canterbury-Bankstown NSW Teachers Federation meeting, the University of
NSW NTEU branch and the University of WA NTEU branch. It is being taken
to the Victorian ETU state council and the NTEU Victorian division
council this week.

The AEU state council ran out of time to discuss the motion so it will
go to their executive. It's likely that the United Trades and Labor
Council in South Australia would have passed the motion with the support
of UTLC secretary Janet Giles, but they lacked a quorum.

If anyone knows of any other union meetings which have passed the
motion, could you let me know on 0413-377-978 or 9639-8622 or on

Motion: Endorsement for 20 March 2004 anti-war demonstration

That this meeting of [ NAME OF UNION ] supports the call for a global
day of action on the first anniversary of the US bombing and invasion of
Iraq, Saturday 20 March.

People are organising on a global scale to demand an end to the
occupation of Iraq and an immediate withdrawal of US military forces
from Iraq.

In Australia, protests will also demand that the Australian government
end its support for the occupation forces and withdraw all Australian
military personnel from Iraq. The budget allocation for Australia's
military role in Iraq should be converted into humanitarian and
reconstruction aid.

We pledge to make the Australian protests as big as possible by:

    1. notifying our members or the details of the local protests and
       encouraging them to attend
    2. organising a union contingent in the local protests
    3. making a donation towards the cost of the protests
    4. inviting a speaker from the 20 March organising committee to
       address members' meetings
