---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Ron Brown's Best, LLC <ron_browns_best_...@ronbrownsbest.addr2.com> Date: Sat, Nov 23, 2024 at 2:03 AM Subject: Woodturning Newsletter - Happy Thanksgifing 2024 To: <timjzieg...@gmail.com> | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Why Pick Woodturning As A Hobby? I have been privileged to engage in just about every type of woodworking from building furniture to commercial store fixtures to running a trim crew for crown molding, wainscotting, chair rail, etc. I had my own line of fine oak and pine country furniture sold through retail stores. I’ve lost count of the number of bunk beds I’ve built. I have made and sold over 1,000 pieces of custom furniture during my career. I’ve noticed the age disparity for different types of woodworking. Have you ever noticed that the vast majority of turners tend to be seasoned citizens? Ever wonder why? I’ve pondered this over the years and here is my conclusion. As we age, we enter different stages of life. Generally, people get out of school and get married; they start a family, the family grows up and moves out, and then grandkids arrive. When we are young with a young family, we tend to focus on things we need for our family, like tables, bunkbeds, wall shelves, etc. Our focus tends to be practical items like flatwork and furniture. As our families age, we build things for our adult children and furniture for the grandbabies. Then we make things like fancy jewelry boxes, keepsake chests, blanket stands, etc. for holiday gifts. Eventually, we retire or at least slow down a bit. Then we have time for the more artistic less practical items: hollow forms, vases, wall hangings, or gift items like pens, bottle stoppers, spinning tops, pepper mills, salad bowls, plates, and platters. Young woodturners that are highly focused on just turning are the exception. My conclusion is that different kinds of woodworking follow our life cycles. Woodturning is a rewarding and creative hobby; here are seven reasons why someone might choose to pick it up sooner or later: 1. Creative Expression: Woodturning allows individuals to create unique and intricate designs from raw wood, offering endless opportunities for artistic expression. Whether making functional items like bowls or decorative pieces, it’s a great outlet for creativity. 2. Relaxation and Stress Relief: Many woodturners find the process of shaping wood calming and meditative. The rhythmic motion of the lathe can be a great way to unwind, focus, and disconnect from everyday stress. 3. Satisfaction of Craftsmanship: There’s a sense of pride that comes with turning a piece of wood into something beautiful or useful. For many, seeing a rough piece of wood transform into a polished, finished product is deeply satisfying. 4. Hands-on Learning: Woodturning involves a combination of technical skills and hands-on experience. For those who enjoy learning through doing, it provides an opportunity to develop new skills and techniques, such as tool handling, shaping, and finishing. 5. Personalized Gifts: Woodturning offers the ability to create custom gifts for friends and family, such as pens, bowls, and ornaments. Personalized handcrafted items are often cherished and can carry sentimental value. 6. Therapeutic and Productive: For individuals looking for a productive way to spend their time, woodturning provides both a therapeutic and hands-on approach. It allows people to make tangible results from their work, creating everything from furniture to intricate decorative objects. 7. Connection with Nature: Wood is a natural material, and working with it gives individuals a deeper connection to the environment. Many woodturners enjoy the process of selecting wood for its unique grain patterns, color, and texture, making each project one-of-a-kind. Remember that wherever you go, there you are. Here is my inspiration for this message. (Eccl 1:8-10 [NIV2]) All things are wearisome, more than one can say. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing. What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one can say, “Look! This is something new”? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time. (Eph 5:15-16 [NIV2]) Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. (Col 3:22-24 [MSG]) Servants, do what you're told by your earthly masters. And don't just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best. Work from the heart for your real Master, for God, confident that you'll get paid in full when you come into your inheritance. Keep in mind always that the ultimate Master you're serving is Christ. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Click on the image to view the Special Black Friday Offers (Summary Below) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Here is the summary of our Black Friday Offers. | | | | | | | | | | More Information about these and many more of our unique proprietary accessories | | | | | | Easy Cut Board From A Bowl System TYPE 2 Easier to use, faster to set up, automatic angles, more range, this is what you've been waiting for. | | | | | | Now available for owners of Type 1 (Original) Bowl From A Board Easy Cut System as a bolt on upgrade. With clamps at all four corners and flat rigid clamping cauls, even pressure is applied across the surface of each ring for perfect glue joints. Traditional clamps only apply pressure on two points (North and South) often leaving poor glue joints on the other two (East and West sides.)
