Subject: Woodturning Newsletter - What It Tells You
To: <timjzieg...@gmail.com>

What does it tell you?

1. When you cut a bowl blank round on the band saw and begin to hear a
tic, tic, tic that you haven’t heard before, what does that tell you?
2. When you hollow out a bowl, vase, or hollow form and the pitch
changes, what does that tell you?
3. When you see a small crack along the edge of the platter, you are
almost finished turning, and hear a small thunk, thunk, thunk, what does
that tell you?
4. You are using CA for the final finish on a pen blank. You see a dull
spot as you sand, what does that tell you?
5. If you have to push harder to make a cut with your gouge, what does
that tell you?
6. As you move down the inside of your bowl blank, you keep getting
ridges, what does that tell you?
7. Torn grain keeps showing up on both the inside and outside of the
bowl you are trying to make your final cuts to finish. What does that tell
you?
8. Your truck has been turning over more slowly lately when starting,
what does that tell you?

My point is that there are almost always signs letting you know what is
coming if you have eyes to see and ears to hear. Whenever something
changes, don’t ignore it; it might prevent something bad from happening.
Awareness will help you foresee what might be coming in time to take action
to fix it or avoid the consequences.

New turners who have not yet learned to recognize the warning signs of
impending danger, push ahead anyway. Experienced turners step away, turn
off the lathe, and address the issue.

*Possible Answers to the questions above:*
1) Band saw blades about to break at the weld will start making a tic,
tic, tic as the blade begins to separate. It is only a matter of time
(usually not long) before the blade breaks all the way through and will
need to be replaced.
2) A change in pitch when hollowing (or cleaning out the bottom) can
indicate the wall thickness may be getting too thin. This sound is usually
heard just before you cut through the side or make a funnel and is often
followed by a long string of profanity.
3) This sound is usually caused by wood movement. The crack means one
piece of wood has moved since the tension is gone and is now striking the
turning tool differently than the piece next to it. If the defect was known
and is intended to be part of the design, proceed carefully. If not, the
piece may be ready to separate while spinning, and could smack your
forearm, causing chaos and more bad language. Don’t ask me how I learned
this.
4) Dull spots in a CA finish mean you’ve sanded through to the material.
You will need to apply more CA and begin sanding from the start.
5) More force to make a cut means your tool needs to be sharpened.
6) Two ways you can eliminate unwanted ridges: changing to a scraper or
switching to a gouge with the heal removed.
7) If there is enough material left, torn grain can often be removed
using the same methods as unwanted ridges.
8) A slow cranking vehicle might mean your battery needs to be replaced,
your alternator is malfunctioning, or your starter is failing.

If you know what to look and listen for, every aspect of life has similar
warning signs. They serve as a warning so we can take corrective action and
avoid sometimes catastrophic events. He who has eyes to see and ears to
hear, beware. Remember that wherever you go, there you are.

Here is my inspiration for this message:

(Ezek 33:6 [MSG]) "'But if the watchman sees war coming and doesn't blow
the trumpet, warning the people, and war comes and takes anyone off, I'll
hold the watchman responsible for the bloodshed of any unwarned sinner.'

(Prov 22:3 [MSG]) A prudent person sees trouble coming and ducks; a
simpleton walks in blindly and is clobbered.

(Mark 4:9 [NASB]) And He was saying, “He who has ears to hear, let him
hear.”

*Non-Slip Ring Chuck*

*Are you sick and tired of getting catches when you try to cut rings? I
have a terrific solution.*

*Now available in 16" version*

<https://ronbrownsbest.addr2.com/url/2936100/72cbe3/>

We recently turned a blank 1.25” thick with our prototype Big Boy Parting
tool. One of the challenges we faced with cutting rings that thick using a
Plywood back plate as a friction chuck was keeping it from spinning and
causing a catch.

So, I was thinking about how we could provide a friction chuck with a
positive lock. Although the lathe might stall if we got a catch, the blank
would not spin against the friction chuck. My solution is to use a two-disk
friction chuck with a 4” square in the center of the front plate. We
epoxied a 4” square waste block to the back of the turning blank (we will
discard it later or turn it down for the base), which will fit into the
recess in the front plate and stop the blank from rotating. It works like a
charm!

*Video - Full Length* <https://ronbrownsbest.addr2.com/url/2936102/72cbe3/>

Our blank was 12x12x1.25 using walnut and maple. Three rings made a bowl
11.5" wide and 3.75" tall. The walls were 0.780" thick before turning to
final shape.

Where to Cut??? <https://ronbrownsbest.addr2.com/url/2936103/72cbe3/>

We got an almost perfect fit for each ring by cutting with the left edge of
the parting tool blade exactly on the line with the kerf on the right side
of the line. We had a step of less than 1/8" showing for glue-up.

*Banjo Table* <https://ronbrownsbest.addr2.com/url/2936109/72cbe3/> *& Disk
Sander*

The Banjo Table mounts into your lathe’s banjo and gives you a stable
working platform. It is available for both 1” and 5/8” post lathes.

Who needs this table?
• Segmented turners wishing to touch up the segments with a
lathe-mounted sanding disk with or without using a miter gauge (not
included)
• Basketweave illusion artists can draw straight even lines on the blank.
• Ideal for fluting with a Router and indexing wheel system
• Anyone needing a flat stable platform mounted on the lathe to allow
controlled access to the workpiece such as carving, drilling equidistant
holes, etc.

Special thanks to Keith Doneski for suggesting this new item.

*Banjo Table*

Available for 1" and 5/8" Posts*

The most popular sizes are 7x7, 10x10, 7x14, and 14x14*. The maximum size I
can make is 16x16 using this material.

*(14x14 for 1" posts only)

We got a request for a 14x14 with double miter slots so it could be used
with a sled. Here is how it turned out.

We can make a wide variety of configurations. Don't hesitate to ask if you
don't see the size you need.

<https://ronbrownsbest.addr2.com/url/2936112/72cbe3/>

*Why you need a Glue Press:*

These glue presses are perfect for Bowls From A Board as well as
traditional Segmented Ring Projects. *With clamps at all four corners and
flat rigid clamping cauls, even pressure is applied across the surface of
each ring for perfect glue joints.*

*Traditional clamps only apply pressure on two points (North and South)
often leaving poor glue joints on the other two (East and West sides.)*

HDPE is known for its non-stick ability as any glue squeeze-out will easily
just flake off with little effort. This material is resistant to warping,
chemicals, and temperature changes. This unit should last for a lifetime of
use when used according to instructions and stored properly.

We have sizes compatible with most segmented projects:

Four Configurations:

10” x 10” – Diameter – Height

10” x 20” – Diameter – Height

14” x 10” – Diameter – Height

14” x 20” – Diameter – Height

Each Press comes with a 5/8” thick HDPE base and top. It has 4 bolts, 4
Five-Star Knobs, and associated nuts and washers.

*Natural Edge Jamb Chuck*

*Why You Need This*

*Even If You Don't Turn Natural Edge Bowls*

*Cole Jaws, Longworth Chucks, and Doughnut Chucks are wonderful devices.
However, you always lose 2" of holding capacity to allow for the gripper
buttons or bolts. If you are using a 12" lathe, you can only hold a 10"
project to finish the bottom. Using the Natural Edge Jamb Chuck you avoid
that limitation and can hold projects up to the full size of your lathe!
Turn 12" bowls on a 12" lathe, 14" salad bowls and platters on a 14" lathe
and a full 16" platter or salad bowl on a 16" lathe.*

I received several calls from loyal customers with health issues affecting
their hand strength. Some had strokes, some Parkinsons and some just not as
young as the once were. This Stabilizer is meant to reach up to 10" over
the front tool rest and can be easily used with one hand. I've priced it to
be within reach of almost everyone who turns and could use a little extra
help.
