Gary,

I was not advising Leo to rename his files. Karl and others already gave good advice to use Ifranview to batch CONVERT the picture files from .bmp to .jpg and keep both the .bmp and .jpg files in the same directory. Read Leo's question which I left unsnipped below. He thought he would have to manually attach all the jpgs and then either have both attached or manually remove the bmps.

Either of the 2 methods of search and replace methods I described would eliminate this tedious data entry and removal. Neither method could possibly just rename the actual files or change the file extension.

That is really not the best way to convert an image from one type to another. While a .bmp and .jpg WILL still open if the file extension is changed, that is not the case with all file types. The biggest problem however is that it is not actualy converting the file. A 2 MB TIFF or BMP that is renamed to JPG is still 2 MB. When *converting* you will also alter the file size, which is what the original poster needed to do. I just did a test and converted a 1.6 MB BMP file to a 368 KB JPG at the 100% setting, and to 42.8 KB at the 50% setting.

If you use Access 2000 you could do a simple search and replace .bmp to
.jpg.
You could also do search and replace using a text editor on a GEDcom file.
This way you would still have only one picture (now jpg).
Either way do so on a copy of your program and check results carefully.

<snip>
If I were to change all my BMP's to JPG files, re-attached all the files,
now I would have twice as many photo's in my Legacy Data File. I have
added a D: Drive to my computer, should I now move all the unattached BMP
files to the D: Drive on my computer as I do not have an external Drive?
Sorry for the long email.
Leo
