I just tried that; I get the message “You can’t link a Female as a Husband” that is even with “Spouse” in place of the word husband.

I got around the gender selection issue for a same gender relationship by adding the spouse as an unattached individual to start with, then after entering name and gender and saving them, I attached him to his spouse.
