The reason for that etiquette rule becomes evident if you have ever been on a list that is bombarded with autoresponder messages from some oblivious vacationer. It doubles the list traffic as every message is promptly followed by the same message that so and so is on vacation... It could be said that autoresponders are the spam of the self-important.
