Hi, I was recently made aware that the Strava permission for mapping is not quite certain. I was preparing a mail to m...@strava.com , see below. But then I thought this wasn't really for me to do. Any advice on content and procedure?
Also, do we have an "official document template" for data providers to sign to allow for use in OSM. We made this in Dutch (http://wiki.openstreetmap. org/wiki/File:Licentie_GR_OSM.pdf), for an organization that wanted to share data and understood the implications (they just didn't want to licence their data directly to competitors, but were willing to take the chance that their competitors used OSM). If there isn't anything else, I could translate that to English for future reference. The templates I found are all questions, not answers. --- Hi, Strava GPX heatmaps are becoming more popular as a tool for OpenStreetMap, as your service grows and grows. It is a pleasure for us to map paths, knowing the data is going to be of immediate use to at least one of your clients. However, using this data rests on a shallow foundation. Our wiki pages [1] state that we can use all the heatmaps for mapping purposes within OSM. There is no formal documentation corroborating this, which means Strava might have changed their minds on this without us knowing. We do not want to take a risk with stuff like this. So please can you formalize this permission - or the lack there of? Our current mapping seems to be based only on an edit to our wiki [2] and a tweet [3], both by the same former member of your team. But then this same person implied [4] we can only use it within the Strava ID editor. We would love to keep improving the map for your users, so we hope it is still OK. A mail to me is of course not enough. The best would probably be a clarification page on your website. Even better a signed document stating the data can be used for OSM mapping, for us to upload to our wiki pages for future reference.
