I suggest you look at how we do that in CLFS at http://cross-lfs.org/view/git/index.html or our current http://cross-lfs.org/~kb0iic/CLFS-GIT-SYSTEMD/html/index.html Those will provide you a better understanding of what you may be doing wrong. One critical step is changing your target triplet so the tools know that it is cross compiling.
