With the new version of readline, with locale support, pasting text into lftp is slow, and I noticed heavy title flicker. It turns out that it's redrawing the entire line for every character.
This only happens when in a multibyte encoding, on the first line, when the prompt contains invisible (\[\]) characters. I think this is a readline bug, but I thought I'd toss that here before I start wading through readline. -- Glenn Maynard
