4.4.5 also exhibits this problem sometimes. What's worse is that there is some silent corruption. I quite often need to run rsync -e ssh with checksumming (-c) to fix one or two files incorrectly transferred over by lftp fish:// (where lftping 3-digit number of files in total using mirror command).
