Paul McCartney - Musical genius - little else. Paul McCartney showed why he should stick to music the other night at The White House. His comment about the last eight years showed that his lack of etiquette is exceeded only by his ego. Laura Bush’s entire First Ladyship was devoted to literacy and George did graduate from one of the world’s greatest universities. Those who doubt his intelligence should realize that, as one commentator wrote after the 2002 off year elections, he is not an intellectual which does not mean he is not intelligent. He does draw from another sphere for his decisions and that sphere is not necessarily wrong. I believe that John Paul II was another who did not draw from the intellectual sphere but rather the artistic, feeling soul. George W. Bush’s speech at the Communion Breakfast in NYC, before the 2000 election, was stellar. Gore was there and had to stand, laughing, to congratulate him on it. His plays on words were humorous and self-deprecating but he made one telling remark about a former, I think deceased, Archbishop of The New York Diocese, I think Evans. He noted that he had met the Archbishop who had left him unsettled with some of the things he had said to Bush. Bush then went on to observe isn’t that exactly what religious leaders are supposed to do with political leaders. Leave them unsettled. I don’t care what else anyone may disagree with George W. Bush about, but that is not the statement of a shallow man. So now, in addition to that Gershwin Award, I hereby nominate Paul McCartney for The Loyal Order of Siam. It’s a variant of The Loyal Order of Siam that we entered into in the Boy Scouts. We’d stand and repeat, "Oh wah, ta goo, siam," until we finally realized what we were saying. Then, we were no longer members. Paul, stand and repeat, "Oh wah, tah nah, siam." Somehow, I don’t think you’ll get it and likely will be repeating it all day. Roderick T. Beaman,D.O.
