But if the header of an active autofilter range is focused, it opens the
autofilter popdown instead - which works well and does not need changing, in my
opinion.

OP is not talking about turning autofilter on or off (which indeed works well,
as your describe), but about opening the header menu of an existing autofilter
regardless of the header's visibility.
