Ok.  I installed the official java 7 from the Oracle site and it had no
positive effect. I set up Mozilla to use the Java 7 plugin for all users. 
Then, I downloaded and then installed
java-1_6_0-openjdk-1.6.0.0_b24.1.11.5-16.1.x86_64.rpm using YAST from the
openSUSE 12.1 download site
[http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Java:/openjdk6:/Factory/openSUSE_12.1/x86_64/].
Then in Libre Office 3.5, I switched the JRE back to 1.6 under Tools-->Options.
 It's now working as it did before on my OpenSUSE 12.2 PC.
