Subject: FAQ: HD's > 8 GB
Hi David!
I read your updated FAQ, there is mentioned, that the problem exists for
L50's or L70's but not for L100's or 110's. This is agains my experience!
Updating a L110 to the latest BIOS gives still the 8GB limitation. No
problem for WinNT, Win2k or Linux, but also tools as Partition Magic can see
only the first 8GB's. For hibernation a part of the disk is used where the
BIOS thinks it is at the end of the disk.
A good practice to partition a larger disk could be:
- Create partition(s) with DOS or other partitioning tools in the area below
8GB.
- Install an appropriate operating system
- Leave 71MB free (for a L100 or L110 with 64MB) for hibernating. 71MB is
neccessary because you have to add the video memory and round it up to the
next cylinder. I dont know the value for 32MB memory.
- Create partition(s) above 8GB with the installed operating system.
A hibernation partition is always nacessary, there are occasions, where the
BIOS puts the Lib into hibernation, even if it is disabled or handled by the
operating system! (It is not total clear for me when and why, but it
occured!)
regards
Gerhard
