I also hate to install windows new, but I do it usually only when I got a
new PC!

Most PC users foreget one important thing: doing a regular backup!

I do it in a very simple way: I have 2 installations on all my PC's, one for
regular work, and one for backup and test purposes.

To do a full backup I start the second installation and do a simple copy of
the first installation and all the user stuff to another disk or PC. It can
be done with drag and drop from the explorer. Of course it is possible to
start the first installation and do a backup of the second one.

My backup disks are removeable and stored on different locations, so even by
theft or burning down my house would not destroy my windows! (Perhaps
windows does not need so much security, but tons of irretrival digital
pictures need it!)

A nice side effect of having 2 installations on a PC is the following: I
never run any unknown program and I never install any untested software on
my work installation! For test purposes I use the second installation, if it
is unstable by installing end experimenting, I replace it by a copy from my
backup disk.

It is all very simple and very reliable. You only need enough HD-space and a
network.

My Lib is never rebootet, except for backup (to activate the second
installation) or if a new installed software requires this!
