Woah, really?  I thought the whole point was to avoid the
confusion between \time and \times.  I think it would be
extremely confusing for "\tuplet x/y" to mean the same thing as
"\times y/x".

Aren't they both good reasons? You get to avoid too-similar command names, _and_ you get a syntax that matches more closely to the musical notation. Seems like a win on both counts.
