Unless your MacBook is 10 years old, it would be much faster to do LilyPond development within a virtual machine on your MacBook. That said, if you are only working on midi2ly, then you don't need the full LilyPond developer infrastructure. In fact, all you need a python interpreter (and arguably git for the source code); MacOS comes with python already.
