Normally one only provide converters to ones own source code format, so people get stuck with it: a form of competition limiting.

And who do we have to blame for that ...

Curiously, one of the major factors in WordPerfect's rise was the quality of its document converters - both in AND out. People bought a copy so they convert between other formats, and then because everybody had a copy everybody started using it as their main word processor instead of the competition.
