Jay,
The issue is that the "\alternative" function can't have ANYTHING
outside of the compound expression brackets {...}. If you need a
"\break", "\pageBreak", or a "\bar" or barcheck "|", they need to be
inside one of the {...} sections like:
\alternative { { ... \break } {...} } or \alternative { {... | } {...} }
and not
\alternative { {...} \break {...} } or \alternative { {...} | {...} }
