Peter, No, this isn't the same problem that other people are experiencing. They get a kernel oops and the entire system crashes. This is some kind of performance problem that may be affecting the entire system, but not causing a crash, per se. You'll need to gather some diagnostic information from the HMC. Perhaps a "dmesg" command to see if anything in the kernel ring buffer can tell you anything, or look in /var/log/messages, or the Samba logs themselves. You might consider setting your Samba log level to 2.
With each copy of Samba, there is included the entire text of the O'Reilly and Associates "Using Samba" book. They have a number of performance tips in there that might help.
