Problem solved: I neglected to tell wget to use the LAN proxy server; I
couldn't tell from wget's messages that it wasn't reaching the suse web
site.

found". I'm running GNU Wget 1.9 for Windows PC; you all seem to run
wget on
a linux box; maybe behavior is different, needs a different parameter.
Is
anyone else out there running wget on a Windows PC to do this?
