I found that to build a Linux capable of rebuilding itself, you need roughly 30 packages. To make it usable, you need about 50, and to cover varying hardware and include one or two production apps (eg: SAMBA or Apache) you're looking at 80. This is still a lot less than what some people might call "minimal". There are 4 shells, 4 scripting languages, and 4 FOUR editors, so there is room for trimming. Secure Shell is included and is for me a necessity. Apache and SAMBA are also included. (Please excuse the release numbers. This list is old.) Otherwise, this is quite minimal: # shells bash-2.05b pdksh-5.2.14 tcsh-6.12.00 zsh-4.1.1 # editors vim-6.1 emacs-21.2 THE-3.1 pine-4.56 (provides 'pico') # scripting perl-5.8.0 tcl-8.4b2 Regina-3.2 Python-2.2.2 # build and/or development autoconf-2.53 automake-1.6.3 binutils-2.12.90.0.15 gcc-3.2 bison-1.75 flex-2.5.4 make-3.79.1 m4-1.4 libtool-1.4.2 gperf-2.7.2 # common utilities sed-3.02 grep-2.5 gawk-3.1.1 diffutils-2.8.1 fileutils-4.1 findutils-4.1.7 shutils-2.0 textutils-2.1 file-3.41 less-381 groff-1.17.2 texinfo-4.6 # package processing patch-2.5.4 tar-1.13 rpm-4.0.3 bzip2-1.0.2 gzip-1.2.4a cvs-1.11.2 wget-1.8.2 # system utilities utillinux-2.11z modutils-2.4.19 kbd-1.08 cron-3.0pl1 e2fsprogs-1.33 cmsfs-1.1.8 portmap-5beta procps-2.0.11 psmisc-21.3 shadow-4.0.3 sysklogd-1.4.1 sysvinit-2.84 # network tools lynx-2.8.4 nettools-1.60 tcpwrappers-7.6 ntp-4.1.1 openssh-3.5p1 openssl-0.9.7c # libraries glibc-2.2.5 ncurses-5.3 libelf-0.8.3 zlib-1.1.4 db-3.3.11 gettext-0.11.5 # zSeries s390tools-1.2.4 (includes 'zipl') cpint-1.1.4 ur-0.4 # xSeries bin86-0.16.10 grub-0.93 lilo-22.2 # "production" things apache-2.0.47 samba-3.0.0 sendmail-8.12.9 (or Postfix) yptools-2.8 ypbind-mt-1.13 autofs-4.0.0pre10 -- R; ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390
