I agree that YaST assumes OpenLDAP when setting up things as a server.
However, I have successfully used YaST to configure the client to point to
an IBM Tivoli Directory Server.  So maybe it's something on the LDAP
server side.

You might want to try this:
0) Start with a fresh server (this is where cloning is your friend)
1) Use YaST to set the LDAP client to point to your Notes LDAP server
2) Flush the name service cache with "rcnscd restart"
3) Try the "id" command of an LDAP-only user.

I found that it helps to try the "id" command before trying login
authentication because there are fewer moving parts.  If the id command
works, you can restart sshd and try a login.  If not, you might get a
better diagnostic in /var/log/messages.  Also, look in the LDAP server log
for hints - have you even been talking to the server?
