I haven't done this recently, but you can try:
(1) Start an installation on the user ID in question (if you have an
parameter file it helps because you don't have to answer all the
networking questions - if you don't have one, just answer all the
networking questions.)
(2) Start the yast2 session (X or VNC recommended) and get up to the "DASD
Disk Management" screen
(3) Activate the appropriate DASD. Now you should have all appropriate
drivers loaded. Leave the install process and
(4) Start an SSH session into your in-memory system.
(5) You should be able to mount your /dev/<volGroup>/<logVolume> over a
mount point like /mnt
(6) chroot /mnt
(7) passwd
(8) exit
(9) umount /mnt
(10) #cp ipl </boot volume>

Your system should now have a new root password.
