If you install THE (The Hessling Editor) you can edit this type of file with full XEDIT compatibility.
I did this recently ... Boot failure ... Provide root password ... > cd /etc > the fstab entered COMPAT XEDIT XEDIT XEDIT from there I fixed the problem, saved the file and rebooted. Problem solved.
